Prisoner of X is so wrong it's brilliant

This entire book is the story of a guy whose career path took so many wrong turns that he ended up doing a right thing that saved Democracy as we know it, but only for a short while.  But all that being right stuff is sort of boring.  The good parts are how wrong a person can be and still earn a living at it.

And his clinging wife doesn't understand.
His son is working for the Daily Mail,
It's a steady job but he wants to be a paperback writer,
Paperback writer
It's a thousand pages, give or take a few,
I'll be writing more in a week or two.
I can make it longer if you like the style,
I can change it round and I want to be a paperback writer
